SILO is a concept which involves the use of tax favored features of code section 72 (life insurance) as a bucket (Silo) to act as the "fixed income" or "bond" portion of a diversified portfolio (i.e. 60% stocks/40% bonds). SILO would be used in the place of or in addition to other fixed income positions in the bond portfolio. The purpose of this strategy is to offer an instrument (like a "financial" Swiss Army Knife) that provides additional advantages to the fixed income portion of the portfolio.
